Marvel Studios Boss Speaks Out on New LGBTQ Hero's Impact on Children

Image
Marvel Studios has worked hard to prove its commitment to the inclusion of characters that represent all walks of life, especially people of color and those in the LGBTQIA+ community. On the LGBTQIA+ front, from Phastos in  Eternals  to Loki and Sylvie in  Loki , Marvel has taken major steps toward making the world in the MCU look more like the world around us.   The heavily anticipated  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness  will be no exception, either. While the story will, of course, focus heavily on Benedict Cumberbatch's titular character and Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, it will also introduce Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez. Miss America, as she's known in the comics, will be the MCU's first Latina LGBTQ character. ADVERTISEMENT Recent interviews with Gomez and Marvel Studios President Victoria Alonso give some insight into how much America Chavez's inclusion in the MCU matters. America Chavez Bring...

Marvel Studios Boss Speaks Out Against Disney CEO's LGBTQ Response

Image
The MCU has recently taken strides to improve its representation, with  Eternals  having showcased the first LGBTQIA+ relationship in the universe. This representation only looks set to grow with  Thor: Love and Thunder 's Valkyrie and  Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 's Okoye reportedly set to enter LGBTQIA+ relationships in the near future. As this happens in the MCU, Florida recently passed the controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law that will ban public schools from mentioning gender identity or sexual orientation. With Disney housing much of its operations in the Sunshine State, employees and fans were expecting the family-focused organization to oppose the legislation. ADVERTISEMENT After Disney CEO Bob Chapek opted to remain silent on the matter, many employees staged a walkout in opposition to the stance. Since then, former CEO Bob Iger has spoken out against his self-appointed successor, calling to a question of "right and wrong....

Marvel Studios Boss Reflects on 'Painful' Pandemic Challenges

Image
Although Marvel Studios is looking forward to an exciting year of new content releases, it's been anything but easy getting back to the studio's current place of prominence. The worldwide pandemic caused difficulties for every studio in the business, but it happened to come at the most inopportune time considering where the MCU was going into 2020. Although Phase 3 and the Infinity Saga as a whole ended in 2019, the start of Phase 4 was delayed by more than six months from May 2020 to January 2021. This included starting the new slate of projects on Disney+ with WandaVision rather than in theaters with Black Widow , and  Black Widow  even had to debut with a dual theatrical/streaming release in July 2021. ADVERTISEMENT Even after the MCU restarted with a record nine new entries in 2021, Marvel dealt with one challenge after another in terms of filming and production - a process that's still difficult moving into 2022. Recently, one of Marvel...

Marvel Boss Debunks Rumors About Doctor Strange 2 Director Problems

Image
Scott Derrickson was first announced as the director of  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness  in 2018 after first taking the reins on 2016's Doctor Strange . At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Multiverse of Madness was revealed to be an MCU movie that would make fans jump, mainly due to Derrickson being a horror director at heart.  However, in January 2020, Derrickson departed the project. C. Robert Cargill, co-writer of the original  Doctor Strange  film, later revealed in a May 2021 interview that  "creative differences"  were the main reason behind the exit, although nobody elaborated any further on the news:  ADVERTISEMENT "It was creative differences. [Scott Derrickson] wanted to do one movie, and Marvel wanted to do another movie." Although the veteran filmmaker left the director's chair, Derrickson is still attached to the project as its executive producer. Derrickson  reassured fans that he is very happy with his ...

Marvel Boss Explains Why Benedict Cumberbatch Is Now the MCU’s Anchor

Image
Sure, Robert Downey Jr.’s performance and presence as Tony Stark is considered by many to be one of the most quintessential and memorable aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But he’s far from alone in that respect. Chris Evans' Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man easily rank right up there with the Iron Avenger. However, it’s someone else who has fallen into place as the center of the MCU, in a role which would be nearly impossible to see anyone else play: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. The character will come back next in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , but most audiences recently saw him patch up his nearly universe-ending botch in Spider-Man: No Way Home . He has played a key role in the wider universe ever since his introduction back in 2016, and the moment he entered the scene, the significance of his portrayal was not lost on the masses. Sebastian Stan Explains Why Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Deserves More Credit

For many Marvel fans, Sebastian Stan will forever be known as the Winter Soldier, Captain America's best friend, and/or Bucky Barnes. The tale of Sebastian Stan and Bucky Barnes is one of the greatest success stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering he evolved from a supporting character in  Captain America: The First Avenger  to being one key player on the Marvel roster, Stan has every reason to appreciate the world-building of the MCU. For that reason, it makes sense that he is a big fan of what Marvel President Kevin Feige does for the brand.  Stan has been a member of the MCU family as long as anyone who is outside of the  Iron Man  or  Thor  franchises. He has seen firsthand how Kevin Feige and his team have molded this intricate web of stories and heroes over the past 14 years. It is known that these legacy actors who helped build this franchise have nothing but praise for the guy in the rotating baseball hat. ADVERTISEMENT Fans ar...

MCU Boss Reveals Why Marvel Actually Brought Back Kingpin

Hawkeye is filled with many interesting characters, and one of them is Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin from Netflix's Daredevil series. D'Onofrio's return has been the subject of many rumors leading to Hawkeye' s debut, and it was ultimately confirmed at the tail-end of the show's fifth episode. In the series, the crime boss was revealed as the big bad pulling the strings behind the Tracksuit Mafia while also diving deep into his emotional connection to Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez.  Before Hawkeye , D'Onofrio portrayed Fisk in the  Daredevil  series for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. Marvel Studios VFX Boss Addresses Shang-Chi Multiverse Theory

Image
The Multiverse is now being pushed to the forefront in the MCU, but there are still projects that mainly focus on expanding the franchise's roster of heroes. One of them is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings . Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows the origin story of Simu Liu's titular martial artist as he confronts his dark past under the tutelage of his father, the Mandarin.  Shang-Chi introduced many notable figures that establish the character's place in the franchise's future, such as the mystical realm known as Ta Lo and the Ten Rings themselves. In addition, the film's mid-credits scene also served as the character's introduction to Earth's Mightiest Heroes.  ADVERTISEMENT Despite having its own contained narrative, Shang-Chi still managed to include subtle teases that could connect to the overarching Multiverse storyline. For example, Ta Lo is set in a different realm, with dialogue hinting that ...

Hulu Boss Casts Uncertainty on Marvel Future

Image
Marvel Studios certainly has a lot going for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with both classical theatrical releases and the new wave of streaming shows coming to Disney+. Even so, this doesn't count all Marvel-based projects that are out in the world right now, with TV and streaming networks such as ABC, Freeform, and Hulu all boasting their own cache of superhero-centric projects from the past few years. In particular, Hulu is still currently moving forward with a few unique projects not necessarily tied to the MCU, which started with The Runaways in 2017. Along with an under-the-radar run for the horror-centric Helstrom in 2020, the streaming network is currently the home for Season 1 of Patton Oswalt's animated MODOK  series as well as the recently-released first season of Hit-Monkey . ADVERTISEMENT The big question now is where exactly Hulu will go with its own Marvel-centric stories as the MCU keeps moving forward at warp speed with anywher...
