The Academy Awards has always had a strange relationship with comic book movies. The likes of Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix have taken home Oscars for their portrayals of the Joker in  The Dark Knight  and  Joker , respectively, but many fans of the fantastic have felt superhero projects are not given fair consideration at these big awards shows. Things for these larger-than-life projects have taken a turn for the better in recent years.  Black Panther  and  Logan  broke the mold in the categories Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay in consecutive years, and the aforementioned  Joker  scored an insurmountable 11 total nominations in 2020. Spider-Man: No Way Home remains the hot topic of the blockbuster movie community as fans eagerly await the threequel's home release in the next few weeks. This comes on top of an intriguing run in the awards circuit, which is now chugging along into the 2022 Academy Awards. Some fans believe that  No Way Home  was snubbed by The Academy, only being nominated for one Oscar for Best VFX. However, it's among the leaders for two newly introduced fan awards that will be announced at the ceremony. Superhero movies are in a better and more prominent place than ever as the 21st century moves along, particularly thanks to the start of the "cinematic universe era." Headlined by blockbuster team-up movies like Avengers: Endgame from Marvel Studios and Zack Snyder's Justice League from Warner Bros., fans have no shortage of heroes to celebrate on the big-screen. The list of Oscar nominees was just released, and the biggest movie of last year just barely made the cut. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home  earned itself a single category: Best Visual Effects. This is obviously not the recognition fans wanted to see the project get—everyone had sights set on Best Picture. Even Sony and Marvel Studios were trying their best to get seen in the eyes of the Academy. The push for the movie’s Oscar chances was bigger than normal for No Way Home ; sadly, it seems to have been a fruitless effort. Tom Holland is one of the staples of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the moment. The young star made his MCU debut as Spider-Man during 2016's Captain America: Civil War , joining forces with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man to face off against Chris Evans' Captain America. As Marvel Studios moves into 2022, the team behind the MCU is heavily promoting the return of its 26th movie  Eternals  which will begin streaming on Disney+ on January 12. Featuring one of the MCU's most high-profile casts in history with names like Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie, Phase 4's third movie made quite the impact on the superhero movie genre upon its November debut - so much so that Disney is launching an Oscars campaign to further promote the flick. As was the case with all of Marvel Studios' 2021 movies, Eternals found a place at the top of the box office charts with the fifth-highest domestic opening weekend of the year, fighting off widely mixed reviews the entire way through.
