Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange is one of the most important players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Phase 4 expands into 2022. Having first played the master magician in the 2016 solo movie Doctor Strange , the hero had supporting roles in four other live-action films before this year's solo sequel - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . Alongside Cumberbatch's hero in the original solo film were Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer and Benedict Wong's Wong, both of whom will be back this time around. Wong even got promoted to Sorcerer Supreme. Also along for the ride is Chiwetel Ejiofor's Karl Mordo, although this movie has only shown the Master Mordo Variant that Strange will fight. When Marvel Studios first used the " universe is expanding"  tagline, it was paired with the franchise's official announcement on in-universe streaming content on Disney+. That mantra was first applicable to shows like  WandaVision  and  The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , although it has since morphed into many different meanings in the time since. While Disney+'s  WandaVision  is a one-season limited series, it is far from the last time fans will see Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch will star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange in May's  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , an Avengers-level crossover event that promises to rewire the very fabric that makes up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plot specifics remain scarce, but a pair of trailers have sent storyline speculation for  Doctor Strange 2  into a frenzy. Both trailers heavily feature Olsen's Wanda, with the most recent batch of footage emphasizing her dark side. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might be next up in the Marvel Studios slate, but it’s what’s next that has some people more excited: Thor: Love and Thunder . Starring Chris Hemsworth, the film brings back Ragnarok ’s fan-favorite director Taika Waititi for another insane ride with the God of Thunder. This time around, however, the original Avenger is in for a twist: his former love, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, is set to return in a big way. The Multiverse is now being pushed to the forefront in the MCU, but there are still projects that mainly focus on expanding the franchise's roster of heroes. One of them is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings . In the second post-credits scene of Eternals , audiences saw Kit Harington's Dane Whitman hesitating to open a box in his office at the Natural History Museum. Upon opening the box, Dane was bombarded by eerie indistinct whispering—the blade within beckoning his touch. But, before Dane could touch it, Blade, played by Mahershala Ali just off-screen, warned him about its potential dangers: "Sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?" Eternals Fans have theorized why Blade would stop Whitman from touching the sword, known as the Ebony Blade in the comics. Whitman used this weapon while acting as the Black Knight, typically on a flying horse. With  Eternals  having just been released on Disney+, everyone can now watch Chloé Zhao’s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe across the world. The film introduces a handful of bold new concepts, from the Celestials' history to the titular characters themselves. That's not to mention the set-up of Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman. In fact, the movie opens more doors for the future than most have since  Avengers: Endgame . For one, the second post-credits sequence teases a team-up between Harington’s Black Knight and Mahershala Ali’s Blade. Then there’s Arishem warning of his return to Earth for judgment, something that may end up leading to a new adaptation of Galactus. Eternals  was one of Marvel Studios' big pushes for heroes in 2021, introducing a whole host of new superpowered characters to the MCU. As a result, the film is largely disconnected from other heroes in the universe and only briefly mentions some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, raising questions about which Avengers and other Marvel characters could cross paths with the race of immortal beings in a potential sequel. An  Eternals   2  is not yet confirmed, with producer Nate Moore saying that a second and third film aren't necessarily guaranteed. However, director Chloé Zhao's enthusiastic hopes to return for a sequel and actress Gemma Chan's tease of more Sersi in the MCU's future could be enough evidence to suggest a follow-up to  Eternals  is on the way. While Eternals saw a fairly tame box office return and quite the polarizing reception from fans, Chloé Zhao's Marvel Studios directorial debut   planted the seeds for galactic consequences on a scale hitherto undreamt of. The film concluded with Gemma Chan's Sersi and company defying the Celestial gods by purposefully preventing the Emergence, an event that would have destroyed Earth and killed all of its inhabitants. Oh, and Harry Styles debuted as Eros. Eternals  has not seen a #MakeTASM3 or #ReleaseTheSnyderCut demand from fans for a sequel, but all narrative signs indicate one is on the way. Even if the immortal ensemble isn't as big of a box office draw as the Spider-Mans and Captain Americas of the MCU, Marvel Studios has made enough billion-dollar flicks to prioritize some storylines over profits.
