Marvel Studios has enjoyed its return to the spotlight in recent weeks, particularly when it comes to some of the darker properties that now reside on Disney+. Mid-March saw the shows that were originally housed on Netflix, including Daredevil and Jessica Jones , make their way onto the streaming service. And all this happened shortly before Marvel's  Moon Knight made its long-awaited streaming debut. Moon Knight is already seeing plenty of success after its first two episodes, with the show fully exploring some serious mental health issues while delivering epic action throughout. Giving fans two all-new characters from Oscar Isaac in Steven Grant and Marc Spector, on top of Ethan Hawke's villainous Arthur Harrow, the series is off to a fantastic start. When Marvel Studios first used the " universe is expanding"  tagline, it was paired with the franchise's official announcement on in-universe streaming content on Disney+. That mantra was first applicable to shows like  WandaVision  and  The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , although it has since morphed into many different meanings in the time since. Marvel Studios has undeniably crafted the biggest and most fleshed-out world in Hollywood history with the MCU. With current fans now being treated to upwards of three films and four Disney+ series a year, it's easy to forget how this all started with just six films releasing in Phase 1 from 2008 to 2012. Crafting this world has taken an immense amount of collaboration between creatives on different projects with producer and studio president Kevin Feige sitting at the helm of it all. Since kicking off with Robert Downey Jr.'s  Iron Man  in 2008, the MCU has expanded drastically over the last 14 years to feature upwards of 19 separate franchises and series to date. Naturally, given the expansive scale of the MCU, the universe is packed with hundreds of actors and creators, who are among the greatest talent in Hollywood.  With the Marvel Cinematic Universe now spanning both the big-screen and Disney+, the world is growing faster than ever with new stars entering the fold every month. Among 2021's many newcomers was Simu Liu in his portrayal of Shang-Chi, a highly-trained martial artist raised in the Ten Rings organization, who now wields the ancient powerful rings. The Multiverse is now being pushed to the forefront in the MCU, but there are still projects that mainly focus on expanding the franchise's roster of heroes. One of them is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings . Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows the origin story of Simu Liu's titular martial artist as he confronts his dark past under the tutelage of his father, the Mandarin.  Shang-Chi introduced many notable figures that establish the character's place in the franchise's future, such as the mystical realm known as Ta Lo and the Ten Rings themselves. In addition, the film's mid-credits scene also served as the character's introduction to Earth's Mightiest Heroes.  ADVERTISEMENT Despite having its own contained narrative, Shang-Chi still managed to include subtle teases that could connect to the overarching Multiverse storyline. Fans were instantly excited when merchandise showed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would feature at least one dragon in the plot. On top of that was the potential for more mystical creatures to be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Eternals explored this idea by showing that some Deviants represented or mimicked monsters of legend. The Deviants were a scourge on the planet, killing as many human beings as possible, but what if they didn't just target humanity? What if the Deviants killed creatures far stronger than humans, like dragons? A new tie-in comic to the MCU shows that not only did Deviants mimic these Shang-Chi- featured   creatures of myth but killed them too. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  was a pleasant surprise for many MCU fans in 2021, providing an origin story for the character of Simu Liu's Shang-Chi and propelling him to being a household name. While the film was praised for its neatly written plot and introducing new characters to the franchise, many viewers were also impressed with the visual effects and the hand-to-hand fight choreography based on martial arts. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of four MCU films from 2021 under Phase 4's massive slate. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and it features a stellar Asian ensemble led by Kim's Convenience star Simu Liu, Ocean 8 's Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, and Tony Leung as the chief villain, Wenwu a.k.a. the Mandarin.
