Having kick-started his comic book movie career with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy, director Sam Raimi will soon return to the genre with  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness  this summer. After directing two legendary wall-crawler outings in the early 2000s, his third outing was plagued by studio interference from Sony, leading to a critical flop and Raimi's departure from the planned fourth installment.  With a primary reputation as a horror director, Raimi's interest in the comic book genre doesn't begin with his Spider-Man trilogy. The filmmaker once pitched a Thor film to Fox alongside Stan Lee in the '90s that never saw the light of day. Romance has been a cornerstone of Spider-Man stories for decades, with the character having numerous romantic interests in the comics. Many of them came and went, such as Betty Brant, but some, like Gwen Stacy, latched onto Peter Parker's heart like a vice. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland's Peter Parker had his first failure in love with Laura Harrier's Liz Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming . Peter was thankfully able to find love with Zendaya's Michelle "MJ" Jones in the sequel and, while Peter's identity as Spider-Man was compromised in  Spider-Man: No Way Home , they still made it work. Sadly, it ended in heartbreak when MJ and everyone else in Peter Parker's life were forced to forget he existed.
