Moon Knight Writer Confirms Secret Marvel Cameo In Episode 1

Moon Knight is the MCU's first small-screen project for 2022 on Disney+. The series features Oscar Isaac as the titular hero, with the actor playing multiple different roles due to the character's dissociative identity disorder. While the comics heavily focused on Marc Spector, Moon Knight flips the page as it highlights Steven Grant instead to start.

While Moon Knight usually works alone during missions, the character's history in the comics shows that he has trusted allies through the years. The show's marketing pushes May Calamawy's Layla as Moon Knight's lone acquaintance in the series, leading fans to question if other notable characters like Jean-Paul "Frenchie" Duchamp or Gena Landers will appear at some point.

At the 8:30 mark of the episode, Steven Grant can be seen talking to a living statue as the main character opened up about his daily life.

Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater later confirmed that the living statue is in reference to Bertrand Crawley, with actor Shaun Scott being credited for the role.

"Okay, I lied a little. We’ve got a Crawley."

In the comics, Bertrand Crawley is a homeless man in New York who often works as an informant for Moon Knight. The character debuted in 1976's Marvel Spotlight Vol. 1 #28, and he was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin. Crawley first met Jake Lockley in New York before eventually gathering intel for Moon Knight.

Will Crawley Show Up in Future Episodes?

Bertrand Crawley is an important character in Moon Knight's storied history, so it's fitting that the character is at least referenced in the episode. However, given Crawley's significance, it's reasonable to assume that the character will show up again in future episodes, especially considering the MCU's history of paying off notable Easter eggs.

Crawley's inclusion could hint that Steven's other personality, Jake Lockley, will also appear in the series. For those unaware, Lockley is the third personality of Moon Knight - a street-smart cab driver in New York City. The character is often described as Moon Knight's private eye, mainly because of his ability to uncover information from thugs and informants.

It's possible that Crawley knows the secret behind Moon Knight's multiple personalities, and he was instructed by Lockley to keep track of Steven's activities. On the flip side, it's also likely that Marc Spector is the one who is keeping tabs on Crawley, waiting for the right moment to obtain information from the living statue.

The first episode of Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney+.
