Spider-Man's Kirsten Dunst Is Begging to Join Marvel's Multiverse

The end of 2021 ushered in the new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that is seemingly focused on the Multiverse. The Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: No Way Home emphasized this tenfold by re-introducing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men into the fray, bringing together two decades of Spider-Man films into one epic culmination. Despite these star-studded appearances, however, others were rumored to be joining.

A year before No Way Home's release, Mary Jane Watson actress Kirsten Dunst and Gwen Stacy actress Emma Stone were both said to be returning in the threequel. It was Dunst who then continuously added fuel to this fire, though originally unintentional, as she was spotted for possible reshoots another year after that initial rumor.

Three months after that, Dunst point-blank stated that she wasn't in No Way Home, and when the film was released soon after that, her words were proven true.

Still, this hasn't stopped the actress from expressing her interest in being indoctrinated into the MCU, just as she has done again.

During an interview with Backstage, Mary Jane Watson actress Kirsten Dunst from Sony's original Spider-Man trilogy was pleading to be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse.

Dunst first noted that she'll likely "stay in the less-structured zone of acting and filmmaking" when it comes to her occupational future:

“I'll probably stay in the less-structured zone of acting and filmmaking... I like when it feels alive... The jobs that don't pay you are the best ones."

When the topic of Spider-Man came up, Dunst eagerly expressed her interest, saying that she "feel[s] like [she's] the only one that hasn't joined it:"

“You know I'd join that multiverse! I feel like I'm the only one that hasn't joined it. I'm like, ‘Please put me in. Put me in the lineup.' I need to pay for my house and kids.”

A Dunst, Stone, & Zendaya Team-up Coming Soon?

This isn't the first time Kirsten Dunst has outright stated she'd be willing to return to the Spider-Man franchise. A month after No Way Home's release, she said her return would be a "no-brainer" and even later teased a reunion with Tobey Maguire.

Dunst's enthusiasm is certainly for good reason. After all, if three Spider-Men can unite, who's to say that their love interests can't either?

The Amazing Spider-Man's Emma Stone was also rumored to return in No Way Home, but script re-writes took her out of the picture. Still, that shouldn't be taken as a permanent sign of her lack of a comeback. Though Gwen Stacy met her end in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the Multiverse presents endless ways for Stone to show face again.

On the other hand, Zendaya's MJ is almost certainly around to stay; her forthcoming arc in Spider-Man 4 was teased in the official No Way Home script, and it's hard to imagine a future installment without her by Tom Holland's side.

Viewers and fans alike could see a Dunst, Stone, and Zendaya team-up on screen before they know it, perhaps even with one of them donning spider-powers of their own.

For now, Dunst's enthusiasm about her wanting to come back as Mary Jane Watson should fuel enough excitement.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to purchase digitally.
